The Pearls of our Sorority

The nine Howard University students who were led by Ethel Hedgeman Lyle into a sisterhood in 1908, Nellie Quander and her gallant group who contributed the added dimension of a national organization and perpetual membership, and those who have come after them, the never-ending stream of eternally young, hopeful enthusiastic women, must be remembered. The Original Group: Marjorie Hill, Lucy D. Slowe, Lillie Burke, Ethel Hedgeman Lyle, Anna E. Brown, Marie Woolfolk Taylor, Beulah E. Burke, Margaret Flagg Holmes, and Lavinia Norman
The Sophomores of 1908: Norma Boyd, Ethel J. Mowbray, Alice P. Murray, Sarah M. Nutter, Joanna B. Shields, Carrie E. Snowden, and Harriett J. Terry The Incorporators: Norma Boyd, Julia E. Brooks, Ethel Jones Mowbray, Nellie M. Quander, Nellie Pratt Russell, and Minnie B. Smith
These Founders of Alpha Kappa Alpha, stepping out of the shadows of slavery, brought to Howard University the freedman's mystic faith in, and yearning for education. They articulated their desire to "take our place in the vanguard of civilization" and they resolved to do this "by culture and by merit..."
Alpha Kappa Alpha constantly strives for unity and education both within the black community and amongst races. Service activities, forums and other events are geared to address the rudimentary issues of the family, education, health, economics, the arts, and the world community. Alpha Kappa Alpha seeks to serve as a catalyst for positive growth by addressing these important issues of the new millennium
Alpha Kappa Alpha proudly calls "soror" many world-renowed women who have had outstanding impacts on our society. Just a few of these unequaled individuals include Maya Angelou, Rosa Parks, Coretta Scott King, Marian Anderson, Marla Gibbs, Jada Pinkett-Smith, and Suzette Charles.
These women, as well as the more than 130,000 that have followed in their path, have impacted countless individuals and communities over the course of Alpha Kappa Alpha's ninety-five year history. Alpha Kappa Alpha women perform service activities that address the needs and issues of the time and they do so diligently, unconditionally, and proudly.
